Default adding audio track

I'm going to put old (silent) content on celluloid films on video DVD's.

The process is playing the film with a projector which will be captured with
aid of a special device to a camcorder. I can input the camcorder directly
to the harddisk recorder with S-video cable.

The result of course wil be video DVD without sound. I wonder how (what
software) can I add sound later to the video, without re-coding (degrading
quality) the video part?

The sound content will consist of comments by people, but these people are
not available during real time recording, so I hope to add this later on if
possible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You can use any audio editing/recording program, that can
make DVD compliant audio, to create an audio file you can
mux with your video file. You can even do the muxing as a
part of authoring your DVD, from the video on your
"harddisk recorder". ( If that is a DVD Recorder with a
harddisk, you might want to use a DVD+/-RW or
DVD-RAM disk to bring the video to your PC.)

Both the audio and video editing programs can provide you
with a time display, that you can use to match your audio clips
to scenes in the video. Using programs like Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ you would build up your audio
track, matching it to the times for the video you want displayed
while the audio plays.

Your player software can also give you the video times.

Once you have your matching audio and video files, make a
copy of each with the same name and put them in a folder.
Then you can play the video file from that folder and many
player programs will play the audio file with the video. This
way you can test it out before muxing or authoring the DVD.

Luck;
Ken

Yes it is harddisk / DVD recorder.

Thanks for your reply.
I had in mind some technique of recording the audio comments while playing
the video. If possible. This would much simplify the synchronizing issue...

My experience which includes working with professional actors would suggest
this is the worst of all possible ways to do it! People fluff there lines,
get ahead/behind, cough and the result is a wasted day of rewind and
starting many takes that then all have to be edited anyway. And at the end
of the day feelings of frustration from all!

I suggest you run the completed film to the people doing the VO first and
take down some timings. Then with out the image record the dialog in short
grabs. Then it becomes a fairly simple editing exercise of moving the dialog
along the timeline almost like railroad carriages into place.

Good luck and happy new year for your project

"Linea Recta" <mccm.vos@abc.invalid> once tried to test me. I ate their

Well if you are putting it on DVD then a vob consists of an MPEG2 video
plus as many audio tracks as you want, so you could do a commentary for
one track, and maybe a selection of suitable music for another..

It all just comes together in your DVD programme (if it's half decent)
