Default SW recommendations

I have a cheap USB video converter to move VHS to DVD, but only have
Windows Movie Maker. I would like something easier and more functional to
record a full VHS and add chapters to the video. I want to record as a
single clip (WMM seems to want to automatically slice up the recording and
then I need to reassemble the video) and choose where I put chapters. Then
I want to record to DVD. I am willing to pay a small fee, but cannot
afford much, say $50 at most. Any suggestions?

If you can provide the make and model of your "USB video
converter", it would be more likely that a compatable program
might be found.

You could go to www.videohelp.com and try to find a listing
for your "USB video converter". There are often mentions of
better compatable capture programs, that you can download,
in the user comments.

Luck;

I got cheap one of these - hoping it might work under linux - buts thats
another story.

To be fair it does record DVD mpeg2 video OK (in windows), within its
limitations

A lot of these come bundled with some ancient editing/authoring software
(Ulead/Pinnacle) and while there is some reasonably priced modern
software it possible using free software.

The first thing for best quality is to grab the video in a suitable
format.
see http://www.videohelp.com/dvd for information on specs for a DVD.

So look for settings in the recording interface (assuming NTSC) 720 x 480
pixels MPEG2 : 29,97 fps audio audio 48 Hz. Maybe just look for DVD-NTFS
medium/good quality, if you are recording from VHS no need for best
quality as what-goes-in-comes-out.

You might need to do some editing so try Avidemux
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
there are lots of tutorials on the internet if you search, try this
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic357763.html

an alternative, possibly easier to use but limited, is VideoEdit Master
http://software.tutorialsroom.com/video-edit-master/
for use see:
http://www.tutorialsroom.com/tutoria...eo-editor.html

Got the video suitable - now author it for DVD,
try DeVeDe - does not make the best looking DVD menu in the world but
othewise sound.

Again plenty of tutorials around - do not be put off by references to
linux, the principles are the same for windows.
try: http://thenexus.tk/how-to-use-devede/

DeVeDe can take various formats of video and convert, also re-encode if
the size will not fit on a DVD. Try and avoid if possible - its all time/
quality wasted.

Once its authored you need to burn on to a DVD.

There is bound to be a better way but ImgBurn will create
1. an 'ISO' image of the DVD see: http://www.imgburn.com/ and for a guide
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...er_imgburn.cfm

and

2. ImgBurn will write the ISO image to the DVD.

best of luck

Belkin F5U207. I got it free with no software.

The comments at videohelp.com for the Belkin VideoBus
tell a very sad story for this USB1.1 device. I think you
could say that it's worth what you paid for it.

Something like this would be the minimum you would
need, and it includes the software.

yes, old hardware, from what I've read it captures in CIF - 352 × 288
resolution.

you can get a better usb capture device easily for your $50, but I would
look at perhaps a stand-alone DVD recorder (cheap one without HD)- buy
used or borrow. Just connect up with composite leads, good enough for VHS.

If you want to experiment a bit with your Belkin, try VirtualDub, if it
sees the device you can capture to compressed .avi format, Xvid works
fine , bit of a learning curve however.

But will it let me add chapters to the recording? One of my "major"
projects is recording some martial arts forms and putting each form in its
own chapter for easy repeating for practice.

It would only be a transport to get the footage into your computer. Then
use something like dvddecrypter to rip off onto hard drive for editing/
authoring.
However a quick look on ebay and usb video capture devices are running at
only $15 post paid so borrowing rather than buying a dvd recorder might
be a good bet.

The chapters selection is another matter, the free authoring apps that I
know such as DeVeDe will only put chapters at fixed intervals so you will
need something better. I use DVD-Lab but that is $$$. Someone here might
have a better idea.
One possibility with (say) DeVeDe is edit each chapter as a separate
video clip and use them for separate titles. Set each title to play after
the previous. Snag that I can remember is there is a noticeable break
between titles.
Its a problem with your limited budget.
