I receive TV and radio with a satellite receiver, which is connected with
scart cable to a hard disc recorder.
Now I have recorded a radio program for someone, but this is in the same
format as video DVD's. Of course I don't need the video of the static icon,
but what is the usual way to keep only the audio information?
Do I have to extract audio from the DVD's each time with software on the
PC?? (e.g. in MP3 format, but preferably without re-coding of course)

First, you only export discs from this hard disk recorder ?
there's no way to connect this recorder by usb/firewire(out)
to your pc?
You already made the recording analog, by using the scart connection,
between receiver and recorder,
made for 2nd time an mpeg recording of it, quality loss..
so, just play this disc in your pc, and record it with something like
Audacity, as a .wav file, and burn a audio-cd from it with Nero,
this is the easiest way.
With a PVR you could use the files, and (de)mux the audio from it,
and convert it to whatever you want with BeSweet, (and a GUI)

Yes.

Afraid not. I do have 'audio out' connectors, but of course this would be
MUCH more work, fiddling with cables, moving recotder etc. Exchanging a DVD
is easier!

That would take 2 hours of real time playing time! With another step of
added quality loss.
So... as an experiment I took the DVD to PC, and now I'm demuxing with
'VobEdit'. I believe I'll get ac3 from this. Now I'll have to find out best
way to convert to MP3 with minimum recoding.
Of course all this is very cumbersome. I would have been nice if the hard
disk recorder had an option to record directly to MP3, in case of radio
reception...

I hope there are Windows apps. for this (with a GUI) !! :-))

No. you already did this yourself, recording to wav file gives no
quality loss.

Your output format must be a mp3 ?
BeSweet is a winDOwS prg. also download BeSweetGUI, and you convert any
audio format into any other....
> Of course all this is very cumbersome.
I already said this, the steps you now mention, give more quality loss...

The cheapest way is to buy a Skysat2 pci card, connect the card on the
2nd coax connection point the dish with the existing sat. receiver,
record the program with the Skysat2 (Technisat) in de demuxed setting,
so you don't get a system file, but mv and mp files, the audio part .mp
or .mp2 you convert to what you like.

Well, that would be handy, but I gave up the idea.
What I did now is: the recorded DVD in PC and demux with VobEdit. This works
fast. Result is an .ac3 audio file. I have been struggling to convert the
..ac3 file into .mp3 format with Ulead media studio pro. This took a very
looooooong time, and the result was very loooooooouuusy (ticking artifacts).
Even though I had used the same parameters as the .ac3 file:
So finally I decided to delete the .mp3 file and to keep the .ac3 file,
which sounds very good. My colleague won't be able to play this in an MP3
player, but it can be played on PC using PowerDVD.

BeSweet can also convert AC3 to mp3, it's an option in the GUI i see now...
it's really easy, first install Besweet, then BesweetGui,
there are very clear readme files with these progs. should you
eventualy run into trouble, but they speak for them selfs
The prog. has a good website: http://besweet.notrace.dk/
just take a look, it solved all my audio problems....

well..... i now just saw, that Besweet has even an VOB to mp3 option....
what more do you want

Just tested ProjectX, which i used for my Topfield .REC files,
You can also demux VOB's with it, it then splits it into the video, and
all audio tracks..
ProjectX can also resample the 48KHz into 44.1KHz format, if needed...
but this can also be done when converting to mp3 i guess...

I've been playing around with the program today. Using the GUI and the
VOBinput plug in. A test result sounded very good and processing time (from
VOB to MP3 in one go) was about half of the playing time, which is
acceptable.
I'll have to exercice awfully with the GUI though, to discover the applied
logics...
Also, I have been searching the setup of my hard disc recorder, but there
are no options for recording sound only. This would have been handy in the
first place. But I suppose there isn't a broad public listening to radio at
all nowadays...

Well, i used to listen, to The Prairie Home Companion, (with the
guy/voice of the Honda commercial) on NPR, Hotbird,
All BBC radio stations are also on the Astra position (i live in the
Netherlands) it's better quality than over a internet sream i guess,
yes, you have to record a blank video signal too, maybe for the sync or
so ? i guess such a stream stays the same, otherwise you get DAB/DRM
types, but these are terrestial based transmissions, only sat-radio i
can think of is the US Sirius service, and the flopped WorldSpace
service, i guess with good sponsors, sat-radio will work..
Internet radio is an easy choice though.....
Most of the time there are podcasts of the Dutch radio progs. here,
which i transfer to my mp3 player, in the ogg vorbis format, which
compresses strongly, and keeps a pleasant sound quality.
