Default Windows Application to Acquire Images From USB Camera

We have a USB connected camera microscope under Windows that comes bundled
with absolutely horrible software. We are looking for a replacement
application that would work with any USB Video Device under Windows to take
snapshots of the image currently projected by the device.

Are there any good third party applications of this type, even just
shareware that is *reliable*?
