Default tiff or bmap file format for quality

When I plug my casio exilim into my pc it saves the photos to the desk top
as Jpeg files. I have been told that jpeg reduces the quality of the
photo, and it should be in photoshop file, or tif or bitmap, for maximum
quality.

Since i initially want to maximise the quality of my photos for later
editing with photoshop, how can i get the photos to save as desktop with one
of the files format that i want? Also if i want to email a photo to someone
who does not have photoshop installed which is the highest quality format
they are likely to be open without photoshop, tiff or bmap please? thanks.

Doesn't the fine manual tell you how to choose the output file format?

As for your second question, it doesn't matter. However, you may find that
the recipients of images in either tiff or bmp will be upset by the very
long download times.

Can you even change the file format for the casio? Most point and
shoot digitals, you cannot change the file format that is saved on the
memory card, it will always be jpeg. If you convert the jpeg on the
memory card and save as tiff or bmp on your computer, it won't improve
the quality (because it has already been lost).

But you will be hard pressed to be able to detect any difference
between jpeg vs tiff or bmp anways. It's fine to save as jpeg.

Saving as a max quality jpeg out of the camera is OK. Most processors
in point and shoot don't handle RAW (if they do at all) files well let
alone a tiff which will be much bigger, so in the camera a jpeg is the
most efficient way to save a file. On my Nikon 995 it takes 10 sec to
process a tif file. The first save you make in photoshop or what ever
editor you have should be to a tiff or photoshop file. The problem
with jpeg is that if you keep saving as jpeg the quality of the file
goes down quickly as a compressed file is compressed again and again.
Bitmap (.bmp) files are OK but they don't preserve the color space
information, so tiff and psd files are better. Also tiff files have a
lossless compression (lzw) that cuts the files size by about 1/3.
So to sum this up, jpegs out of the camera is OK, save as tif or psd
while editing and ideally as your reference file (digital negative).
Files can be changed back to jpeg for viewing on the web.
