Default Taking pictures in cold weather

Greetings! I am thinking of going to Iceland and Greenland in coming
summer. I have Kodak P&S Z612 and Z1275 and a Canon 300D DSLR. I sent
an e-mail to Kodak about taking pictures in cold weather. Kodak
replied next day by e-mail that both Kodaks will function from 0 to 40
C [32 to 104 F]. The instruction book of Canon 300D [page 19] states
that Canon battery pack will work from 0 to 40 C.

What happens if the temp goes below zero degree? Any suggestions about
taking picture below zero degree? With thanks.

I doubt you'll have many battery problems unless it's
well below zero. Keep them warm if and when you can.

Be careful when bringing the camera indoors. If you take
a really cold camera into a warm and humid room, you
*will* get condensation forming on the lens and perhaps
the electronics. There is potential for permanent
damage.

Sudden temperature changes are not good for your
equipment.

Aside from any problems you have with the camera, be advised that below -10
Celsius, speech is no longer possible, that is not so much the problem as
when the temperature finally rises above -10 Celsius. It is at this point
that the frozen words all thaw out, causing a lot of noise. You would be
advised to wear hearing protection or to stay indoors during this interval.

Yes, with lithium batteries, you should be able to go to about -40C.
But keeping the camera under your coat is probably a good idea, and
should prevent problems.

I live in Northern Canada and I am taking pictures at -35C without problem.
Important is to keep camera in inside pocket close to your own body and
remove it just before you want to take a picture. Watch you breath so the
vapors do not get on lent to prevent fogging.

Battery will loose its charge very quickly in cold, but regain it back when
warm again.

potentially, any lubrication in mechanical
parts can freeze solid...

Which isn't significant though. With digital cameras
the batteries will fail before the lubrication fails.

Besides, the OP is trolling for attention. He won't see
anything near "cold" in the summer...

He posted this from the University of Mississippi Medical School site.
He probably hasn't been exposed to weather at those latitudes before and
just wants information. Calling anyone a "troll" just because they lack
certain information isn't very friendly in my opinion.

Trolling is inherently unfriendly.

Of course, judging from his posting history, perhaps
suggesting that posting the same stupid question twice a
week apart should not be called trolling. (Yes it is an
inherently *stupid* question to ask about -40
temperatures in the summer, even in Greenland, never
mind Iceland.)

The other descriptive options available are
significantly less friendly though...

If you are going in the summer, I really don't think there should be a
major problem - you're likely to not see much below 0 (F). I would simply
go and have fun.
