SB800 Flash

I have a Nikon D100 and just bought a SB800 flash need to know what it
means about being hooked up as a slave.
Is that the only way this can be hooked up?

No, it's not.
By default it will be the main flash, it works as a slave only if you have
another flash set up in controller mode and the SB800 programmed to act as a
slave.
