Default Ricoh Caplio R5 not connecting to any computer

Does anyone have a Ricoh Caplio R5 camera? Mine turned up yesterday
and was working fine (in mass storage mode) but today it will not
connect to any computer I try. It just sits there saying "Connecting"
but never does. I followed the instructions in the manual to the
letter but it looks to me like it's *******. I was wondering if
anybody had any idea about how to perform a hard reset to get it back
to factory defaults (not through the menu option that only does some
of the settings)? This is the second R5 that has done this to me and
I'm being to think that I'll just ask for my money back.

I suggest that you use a card reader rather than the computer connection.

Sometimes USB devices interfere with one another. For instance sometimes I
have to unplug my USB ADSL router before my MP3 player will connect,
otherwise the hourglass just spins endlessly. The problem seems to be
random. I would suggest rebooting your computer with other devices removed
to see if that helps.

Other things to check are whether the camera has to be switched on or
whether it will draw power from the USB, and also try varying the order of
plugging each end of the cable in / powering up. USB plugs at the computer
end are made to a fool-proof standard re the order in which the electrical
contacts are made, but the camera end plugs are often proprietary and might
well not comply with the USB standard (e.g. connecting the ground pin
before signal or power etc), so I would plug the camera to the cable first
and then plug the cable to the computer to be on the safe side.
