I am quite pleased with the Kodak Z612. It has 12X zoom, 6MP, very
fast autofocus, and is a bargain online. At its longest focal length,
the f4.8 aperture is a little slow, but it's otherwise a very useful
camera.

IMHO - the P850 is preferable if they still have some on the online store.
At least if one is interested in raw - it does raw, tiff, jpeg - very nice
camera about $225.

Fisher-Price makes a great lightweight camera

For Sports competition you really need an SLR due to the shutter lag in
non SLRs.

Buy the Samsung GX-1s from Amazon (see "http://tinyurl.com/2z6wjv")
which comes with a 18-55mm lens for $451. Then for $175, after $50
rebate, buy the Pentax DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED Lens, see
"http://tinyurl.com/2ol7yl".

Rebate form is at "http://www.pentaximaging.com/purchase/rebates_offers/"

Sorry, it's $626. But it's the cheapest you can get away with for sports
photography.

Indeed. My granddaughters love theirs.

But how do you get the battery out (or recharge it without removing it)? It's
not at all obvious to a half-senile geezer like me.
