Rechargeable AA's that keep the charge when on the shelf?
Someone told me that there are some newer type of rechargeable
batteries out there in AA size (maybe AAA size) that can sit on
the shelf after a full charging and actually hold that charge for
a long time, instead of losing the charge like regular
rechargeables.
But I can't remember what they are called and where they are able
to be purchased.

Sanyo Eneloop
You can get them at Thomas Distributing, or Wal-Mart, or almost anywhere.

Also from Thomas Distributing and rated even better than eneloop: IMEDION by
Powerex. They are EXCELLENT!

Useful -- not. That will get you a lot of corn, cars, and canine
references -- to name just a few.

The names already mentioned (Sanyo Eneloops and RayOVac Hybrids)
are widely available in the USA. Similar "low self discharge" NiMH
cells (in both AA and AAA sizes) are available in Europe under
different names, and possibly you'll see Eneloops as well. Some
brands (Radio Shack for one) don't give their "low self discharge"
batteries any particular name, but as far as I've seen, all of these
batteries have one thing in common. Somewhere on the label they'll
say "Pre-Charged" or otherwise indicate that they can be used
immediately, right from the package without needing to be charged
first as is the case with standard NiMH batteries. The capacities
will be a little lower than you might expect, usually 2,000 or 2,100
mAh, vs. 2,600 to 2,800 mAh for the highest capacity standard
batteries. Don't let that put you off, though. Many people have
reported that when used in high power external speedlights, they're
able to get more flashes per charge from Eneloops than from standard
NiMH cells that have higher mAh ratings.

One might add 'batteries' to the search, just to narrow the results to
something less than billions.

The way most of use our cameras, I suspect that the lower power storage
capacity would be more than compensated by the slower rate of
self-discharge, so many users would get more shots per charge.
