Is there a camera available that will permit viewing (before capturing)
an image on an external LCD?
That would be a step up from Canon's Remote Capture utility that allows
computer control of the camera via USB and directing images after
capture to a monitor.

You should be able to output to an LCD tv as easily as to any other - or
did you mean and LCD monitor - which would probably have the same
difficulties as connecting to any other monitor - or did you mean
something else?

To clarify ... we're talking BEFORE the shot, NOT AFTER ... the object
would be to compose the shot IN THE CAMERA using an external monitor as
opposed to (or in addition to) the camera's screen.
For example...kid climbs on Santa's lap and photographer composes shot -
which is visible to the proud parents before and after the snap and is
held on screen (via VGA out from a laptop) while they're waiting for
print processing.

If you're talking about VGA output of the live view LCD screen many of
the more expensive cameras with live view LCDs have that facility.

Canon 40D, Nikon D300, Olympus for the DSLRs and most compact models
with a video out plug that people normally use to plug into their TV to
make slide shows. I'm not certain about these but I believe that's a
pretty normal feature: it simply relays what would show on the back of a
camera to a TV including whatever meter display info etc.

Yippee! Problem solved....and inexpensively.
Got on hand a Powershot G5 that can be previewed and controlled by
PSRemote software from the people at Breeze Systems...http:// www.breezesys.com/PSRemote/index.htm.
Once linked to a computer via USB one can control the camera from the
keyboard, including zoom, ISO, etc. The settings allow you to fill the
screen, if desired, with a preview of the image to be captured. The
shutter can be triggered either on-camera or from the keyboard. Breeze
offers a free 15-day download. Activation is 49 bucks.
Here are the Canon models that match up with the software. Not all
models respond to all options.
(Gotta try with my S1 IS, too.)
Pro series - Pro90IS, Pro1
G-series - G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, G7, G9
S-series S30, S40, S45, S50, S60, S70, S80, S1 IS, S2 IS, S3 IS, S5
IS, SX100 IS
A-series - A30, A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, A400,
A510, A520, A620, A640
Digital IXUS - SD100 (Digital IXUS II), SD110 (Digital IXUS IIs), S230
(Digital IXUS 330), S400 (Digital IXUS 400), S410 (Digital IXUS 430),
S500 (Digital IXUS 500)
Breeze Systems also has software for Canon DSLRs that includes
previewing and many more features and is only 95 bucks. Here are the
Canon models that can be controlled. http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemoteP...es.htm#cameras
