Default problem with canon camera

My parents have a Canon S1 IS camera. It has recently stopped taking
photos. It acts like it is shooting, but only shoots a black photo.
The screen works fine as I can review older photos. I suspect the
shutter is not opening.

Any idea if I can fix this myself? I suspect Canon's repair service
would cost more than just buying another camera.

Have you checked the support area of http://www.canon.com for help?

You should try to slam the camera, with all your might, against a hard
surface like concrete or steel. Again and again and again. Forever.

Try this, and see if it matches the problem with the S1.

On the other hand, that S1 (while a wonderful camera) is now dated
technology. I bought mine back in 2004. I think your parents deserve a new
camera.

I would certainly want MY kids to buy me a new one at this point...

Dwight has probably identified this defective CCD problem, and Canon will
fix it free-of-charge and will pay the shipping in both directions.

I had an A70 and an S400 with this problem. They fixed the A70 and sent me a
refurbished SD1000 even though they were both out of warranty.

Way to go, Canon!

Canon's repair of my S1 is the reason I now have an S3. They sent a
refurbished S3 at no cost to me. I wish more vendors would make repairs that
way...
