I SPENT A LOT OF MONEY TO BUY PHOTOSHOP LAST WEEK. BUT I CAN'T FIND OUT HOW
TO CONVERT MY JPEGS TO RAW SO THAT I CAN BETTER EDIT THEM WITHOUT LOSING
DETAIL.
IS THIS NORMAL WITH PHOTOSHOP? THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE SHOP THAT SOLD IT
TO ME SAID THAT PHOTOSHOP COULD DO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING AND THAT IF THERE
WAS A PROBLEM WITH IT THEN ALL I HAVE TO DO IS TAKE IT BACK. BUT THEY ALSO
SAID THAT I CAN'T CHANGE IT IF I HAVE USED THE CD SO I AM KIND OF STUCK.
DO ANY OF YOU GUYS KNOW OF ANY WEBSITES WHERE I CAN POST MY PHOTOS, MAINLY
OF ANIMALS AND FLOWERS SO THAT I CAN TRY TO SELL THEM?

you don't convert jpeg to raw. you shoot raw in the camera and then
work with it, converting to jpeg at the end for posting on line or
email or whatever you want to do.

Hi.
You have, sort of, got the right idea, about editing
What you should be doing is "Save As" Tiff or Psd which are both Lossless
File Types. You can then edit and save without doing any further damage.
If your Camera can save in RAW then that will give you more flexibility with
exposure, contrast, white balance etc.
From RAW you can convert directly to Tiff or Psd to do any editing, without
your images ever having been compressed ( damaged ) by JPEG.

BUT MY CAMERA WON'T SHOOT RAW, THATS WHY I WANT TO CONVERT IT WITH THE
SOFTWARE.

First of all, STOP YELLING!! Use lowercase. USING ALL UPPERCASE is
considered RUDE.
You have to use your preferences setup in Bridge to open Jpeg and Tiff files
in ACR. There are several settings that need to be set:
In Bridge Preferences>Thumbnails>Prefer Adobe Camera raw , click this box.
In Photoshop Preferences File Handling>Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for handling
JPEG files. Set this box.
Once you have the jpeg file open in ACR, you will from there be able to
generate DNG raw files. Bottom left hand corner, "Save Image". Before you do
so, set your workflow options, bottom center. Go for 16 bit and Adobe RGB.
Even without converting to DNG, you can do a lot with jpeg files in ACR. Its
quite amazing actually.

then you won't see much of a benefit. once it's converted to jpeg, the
advantage of working with a raw file is gone. you can't go back,
regardless of software.

You missed the point, CS3 will open jpeg ad tiff files in ACR and from there
you can make adjustment or save in whatever format you choose or open in
Photoshop CS3.

although that's true, and perhaps it's easier to adjust the image in
acr instead of in photoshop itself or another editor, the advantage of
a raw file is still lost.

Since there is no raw file to lose, there is nothing lost, its all win-win.
