Default People who visited Angkor Wat - 35 to 105 or 35 to 420 mm for pictures.

Hi! I have two point and shoot cameras - one with 35 to 105 lens
[Coolpix L12] six ounces with battery and card and another with 35 to
420 lens [Kodak 612] over sixteen ounces with battery and card. Do I
need more telephoto than 105 mm to take pictures at Angkor Wat? With
thanks.

If you are on a safari holiday then a long lens might be useful, but
shooting architecture tends to favour wide angle.

You need at least 200mm if you climb on the hill opposite Amgkor Wat and
take a photo of Angkor Wat. In that case you'll need 200-300mm and a way
to stabilise the camera.

For all other photos 105mm is sufficient. Well, you might take the hot
air balloon and shoot from there Angkor Wat. In that case you'll need
200-300mm and short exposure times, as the ballon is very unstable.

No telephoto is needed to speak of. Most architectural details are wall
carvings, statues, etc, that you can walk up to. What you may want to bring
is a compact tripod, and get there at dawn for some sunrise shots of the
main approach, before the place crowds up.

While the weight difference between 6oz & 16oz is not really 'significant',
I must warn you that there is a lot of climbing (under a merciless sun)
involved in the various Angkor temples. The lighter camera may have an
advantage.

I agree that you will probably be using the wide more than the tele; I would
suggest that you take whichever camera that offers the superior image.

Have fun!

Or just use a high shutter speed, tropics tend to favour that mate.

And be prepared to carry it with you at all times through your entire trip
or it will be stolen, probably be stolen anyway.

I don't think you need a long zoom there. 3X was enough for
me and for my wife. It is very hot there, especially in
mid-day, so you should avoid carrying extra weight. But
bring lots of memory cards.

Ok, I guess I don't see how the tropics favors a high shutter speed.
If there is something I am missing it would be of value to know, since I
live in the tropics.
