This is a somewhat disparaging term bandied about these days.
My latest carry about digital camera is a Canon SD1000, around $210
for the camera and battery/charger etc.
Point and Shoot would imply that there is just one
simple setting that will cover all events on a hit or miss
basis, like the old film box cameras.
However this Canon, similar to many others
from Kodak, Olympus, Casio, Sony etc., has
17 functions and each function has access to
over 40 settings, giving the camera at least 680 variables,
the owner can decide such settings as Mp size, compression,
flash settings, Manual , Autofocus, Redeye, Macro,AF lock,AEE,
Single shot/continuous,2/10/custom delay timer, AF assist beam,
Zoom,digital zoom,Metering, Exposure compensation,
White balance, ISO Speed, Auto rotate, etc, etc.
The owners manual alone is 160 pages.
So maybe another term is needed to cover this class of
modern cameras.
This camera has way more than Cartier Bresson or
Ansel Adams had in their day, so there is no excuse for not taking
great pictures.

What's wrong with a cheap point and shoot camera?
Someone who knows what they are doing can take far better photographs with a cheap P&S camera than a person who doesn't have much
of a clue using the best DSLR available.
''...The Optio A40 - Pentax's first 12MP camera - features a mode

Which is an admission from the manufacturers themselves that
P&S cameras do not conventionally compete with SLRs in terms
of picture quality.

I'm not sure how a Pentax statement is an admission from multiple
manufacturers, to begin with. It is also common knowledge that the
only time a P&S equals, or comes close to equaling, a half decent DSLR
is in perfect conditions. So it's nothing like an "admission." I don't
recall anyone expecting the same or better quality photos from
Instamatics or from any half-frame camera, including the vaunted
Olympus Pen models. Good, yes. Not the same.

Why is that bad Richard? Pentax will have 2 new dSLR cameras for the
spring PMA show. The K10D is a hard act to follow, so Pentax wants to
get it right. The K1Z will likely be a magnesium body, weather sealed
12.2 megapixel.
I could tell you more but then I would have to kill you, and eat your
brains.
