Hi all, I am new to the group and I am looking for a DSLR. Is there a
FAQ around somewhere please? I KNOW I am filled with stoopid noob
questions. Thanks.

There is no FAQ for the group.
Suggest you read the reviews at DPReview.com.

Best regards,

Buying a dSLR doesn't make you a photographer,
it makes you a dSLR owner.

Chris, the newsgroup: rec.photo.digital.slr-systems is for SLR systems,
and it's worth asking your questions there. For starter, I would look at
the lower-end Nikon and Canon models - try holding them and see which is
more comfortable and easy to use - but it may also help you decide if you
can be more specific about what your photographic needs are.
The number of megapixels is not /that/ important, in fact the lower count
of the D3000 might make me prefer that camera over the Canon 500D. If you
only want a single lens to start with, I would recommend the 18-200mm from
either manufacturer rather than the 18-55mm "kit" lens.

I'm afraid not.

Just go ahead & ask them, most of us will be happy to help. There's one
loon here who posts under many names, who insults anyone who talks about
DSLRs, but just ignore his posts. (I'd give you his name, but he changes
it several times a day. Just look out for an idiot who always claims
that P&S cameras are always better than DSLRs.)

Actually there is a group FAQ, but it dates back to 2002 and seems a
bit quaint given some of th current material found here now. http://www.mindspring.com/~erica/welcome.html

Agreed. Read the posts with an open mind and enjoy the show.

What sort of budget did you have in mind?
What sort of photography did you want to do?
Where in the world are you? (This helps as it is no good suggesting you
look in a store/web shop that is the other side of the planet :-)
The 2002 FAQ is going top be to far out of date to be very useful.
Also Remember:-
God Uses a Nikon and nutters use Canon :-)
The Canon Heretics tell lies and say God Uses a Canon :-)
No other Cameras other than Nikon and Canon exist :-)
P&S are far better than DSLR's in EVERY respect :-)
A bigger/longer lens makes you a better photographer (assuming you are
male :-)
You MUST have the Latest camera body and at least 2 old ones :-)
To be taken seriously you must memories the specification of every Nikon
(or Canon if you are a delusional heretic) camera and lens since the
Nikon F-2b3 (never released experimental beta2) of 1843 that no one has
actually seen.
You must either know film is dead and will never be used again EVER or
that it is about to have a miraculous recovery and really serious
photographers will always use film.
