A friend has just come home to Ireland from the Bahamas and he accidentally
formatted the card in his camera. I often use PC Inspector to recover
deleted images but it won't help here. Does anybody know of a recovery
programme that will recover images from a formatted card?

If he did a full format, the images are lost.

Download this one: http://vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html. I
use PhotoRescue but for that you have to register although the download
will tell you if images are recoverable. PhotoRescue and the download I
suggest will recover from formatted cards, other posts notwithstanding.
I don't like pc inspector for camera cards.

FWIW I don't think this is correct. I have had varying success trying
several recovery software, most of them dedicated to the recovery of jpegs
from media cards.
Card Recovery has been the best (should I say least disappointing) and
others include Digital MediaRescue. Photo Rescue and Photo Nose. I suggest
you Google to see what's available. Try them all as most offer a free trial
ie a free evaluation where you can see if they can recover the files.
Either they give a thumbnail or a few recoveries tempting you to buy to do
the full job.
If the images are that precious then I guess the best route will be to use a
professional service who will most likely do a good job but charge you
highly for the privilege.
Cheers

Format resets the file allocation table. The images are still there, until
one starts recording new images or files. Recovery is doable.

Is this still valid, could not get connected with the above link.

I think the confusion arises because people are thinking in terms of
hard or floppy quick format disk deleted file recovery. These rely on
all but the first letter of the filename being intact and to some extent
files being written contiguously although not confined to that.
Only a floppy disk full format will write over file data to check
surface and make any recovery impossible (please don't tell me what the
NSA and others can do, they didn't have any luck with the Nixon tapes).
The file recovery we are talking about here ignores the file table (like
it had a choice after a format!). Apparently they use knowledge of the
jpeg file structure and a little magic to scan all the clusters and put
the files back together. All except the filename, although I suppose
that could be gotten from the exif data.

Not so, but the original poster should download "Photo Rescue" and give
it a try in order to find out for himself.

Thanks everybody. I tried everything suggested but nothing was successful. I
loved the Recovery Manager as it is much faster and user friendly than PC
Inspector (I tried it on some of my own cards and it's a breeze)(
