Default impressions from Nikon S4

I just got delivered a refurbished Nikon S4 which I bought on eBay. I
am slightly disappointed. The camera feels cheaper and of a lower
class than Panasonic LX1 I have. But I think Nikon S4 will be quite
satisfactory for the tasks I bought it: I bought it for its swivel
body and for its 10x zoom.

The eBay seller states that "This item is in 'near-new' condition with
little use". Yet the camera shows it made over 8000 shots. Does this
constitute "little wear" ? How мany shots is a digital P&S camera
capable to do in its lifetime on average ?

Hello,

A DSLR contains a "focal-plane shutter," that can wear out, after so
many thousands of actuations (the limit varies, by model, with the
higher-end ones being far sturdier). Such shutters are capable of
rather high speeds; hence, their use, in more serious and expensive
equipment.

Conversely, a "point and shoot" digicam employs, either an electro
mechanical "leaf shutter," or a strictly electronic "shutter," with
no moving parts, whatsoever. These types are both quite rugged, and
normally survive longer than the cameras, in which they're installed.

So, quit worrying! :-)

Cordially,
