Do I need special software to download images from a HP Photosmart 850
digital camera? I bought the camera at a rummage sale. The HP website
doesn't offer downloads for Windows 98 any more. I've searched the
Internet for HP 850 software without success. HP provided a CD with a
lot of image processing software with the cameras when new. Do I need
that? Camera descriptions on the Internet say the images are recorded
on SD memory cards in .jpg format and transferred to a computer over
an SB cable. Is this standard stuff than some generic computer program
can upload from the camera to the computer? This is my first digital
camera so I know next to nothing about the file transfers. Thanks for
any help.

No, but an XP (or win 2000) computer will automatically "see" the camera as
a removable media drive, and will usually transfer the files with copy and
paste. You will usually need a male to mini usb cable, if your camera has the
standard mini USB and not a proprietary one.You can also buy an "all in one"
card reader, for 11 euros, and you connect this to your computer, with an
USB cable again, and then you insert any card (SD,CF,MS etc.)and you
transfer files again, as it is "seen" again as a removable drive.I don't
know though if this is possible with win 98 though;I had a failed attempt
when I tried to resurrect an ancient PI machine with german win 98, and
bought a modem so at least it would connect to the internet, but (even
though the modem claimed support for win 98)it didn't, unless we would find
the original,10 year old modem.(Which was impossible)

Not familiar with that camera, but your description sounds like pretty
standard stuff to me. Forget the "SB Cable". You can purchase SD cards
and an SD card reader that plugs into the computer's USB port fairly
cheaply.
To view the pictures, you can use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
(built-in to WindowsXP). JPG is a very standard format. Any photo
editing software should be able to read it.

You may be out of luck trying to do anything on Win98. Even if you get a
card reader, there's a good chance Win98 may not work with it. Think about
upgrading to XP, then you can get a card reader that will be automatically
recognized. You'll need to make sure your PC has a USB port. Not sure
whether the image editing software on the CD will work with XP, but unless
you can transfer the images to begin with you can't do anything.

SATA, with an 17" Philips LCD, Asus mobo, sells for 560 euros complete with
taxes.
