Default Freeware for jpeg files.

Sorry, a newby question.

Can anyone point me towards some freeware that allows me to join two
or more .jpg images to make a composite image, and save it as one .jpg
file. It should be simple but the software I have presently does
everything but.

Thanks

The answer depends on what you are calling "joining". Do you mean to connect
two or more images side by side (or top bottom) to create an image that is
larger in one or more dimensions, as in a panorama. If so Autostitch is a
very good one for this and is free. This works only if there is some overlap
between the images so that the program can align the images properly.

If you are asking about layering several images so that some of the parts of
one image are placed on (or in) the second image, there are a few freeware
programs, with variable accuracy and ease of use.

So if you can give us an idea of what you are trying to do, maybe we can
point you in the right direction.

I am doubtful any photo software would have any problem making a larger file
using the pasted images from the other two. Have you tried simply making a
new image twice the size of what you want to "join" and paste the other
images into the new image, then save the new image? Even the freeby Paint in
Windows can do that.

If you're talking about stitching photos together to create a
panorama, try Autostitch at:

The download says trial, but when it expires, you can download and
install again. I've been using it for a couple of years now.

If you simply want to put the pictures side by side or above one another
without trying to match up features then the Irfanview image viewer is very
easy to use, you simply select a bunch of images in a file dialogue and say
whether you want them side by side or above one another. Then save the
result as a new jpg file.

If the images are slightly different sizes it will tweak one of them so
they are the same height or width but it doesn't do any image analysis such
as would be required for stitching proper panoramas.

The only annoying thing is that when selecting files you can only see their
names, not thumbnails, so you need to know what the files are called before
you start.
