The 10.5mm/2.8 DX will fit but you will need to focus manually.

I used a 16mm 2.8D on a 70D with no problems; might check out nikon usa for
compatibility.

The 16/2.8 fisheye uses the motor in the camera for auto-focussing, and the
70D (I presume you mean D70) has a motor to drive the lens focus, but with
the D40 you would still need to focus this lens manually.

My 10.5mm Nikkor says "AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f2.8G ED" on the
box. What does the "AF" mean? It certainly doesn't autofocus.

Best,

the 10.5mm is not an af-s lens and therefore it will not autofocus on
the d40/d40x cameras. it will, however, autofocus on all other nikon
dslrs.

The 16/2.8 Fisheye-Nikkor is compatible with the D40 all right, but it won't
autofocus on that camera as it does on your D70 since the D40 doesn't have
the AF motor in the body.

And a 16mm fisheye won't give anywhere near the coverage on current Nikon
DSLRs that it will on a 35mm camera, of course.

The 10.5/2.8 DX Fisheye-Nikkor is the only one that will cover 180 degrees
corner to corner on today's Nikon DSLRs. That won't autofocus on the D40
either, but depth of field is so enormous it's questionable whether anyone
really needs AF with that lens.

Well, did you switch the A/M switch to A on the camera and the lens?
Actually, what camera (model) are you using?

Here's a page that should help you understand what all that junk written
on your lenses actually means http://www.bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm

No. It is the only Nikkor, though.
