My 40D body arrived last Monday (16th). The Sigma lens that I ordered
wasn't going to show up until Friday so I went to a local camera store
and purchased the Canon 50mm f1.8 II lens so I could play. Here are some
pictures I took the first couple of days. So far I'm very happy with the
camera but have a lot to learn. I was very pleased with the lens. It
performed very well for an inexpensive lens. On some shots it creates
some rather interesting bokeh but most of the time I thought it was
rather nice.
I've been away from photography for awhile and am feeling rather rusty
so would appreciate any constructive criticism and suggestions and
pointers that you might have for me.

Agreed. BTW, that 50mm f1.8 is a superb bargain lens.

Both true, but for photos like these, get the 100mm f/2.8 macro.
It is far better at closeups than that 50 mm lens, and
equally superb at telephoto shots.

Good job, Russell. You might find that lens a little slow to focus for
moving subjects but for what you are doing you made a good choice.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any photos, macro and telephoto,
taken with that lens that you would mind sharing?
