Default Faulti picture file

On the latest card of photos I shot 1 photo could be viewed on the
Olympus SP550 as a normal colour in the top half but the bottom of the
photo wa mostly green. On the computer monitor the same photo displays
the top half but the bottom half is blank.

Does this indicate a fault witht he XD card or the camera?

Thanks
Mike

Maybe a fault with the photographer. Something like that has happened
to me the times I jerk the memory card out of the camera too soon after
taking the last picture -- even _if_ I've turned off the camera. It
doesn't really go off_OFF until it completes the transfer of the last
image from the internal memory to the removable memory card.

It wasn't the last photo I took

Probably so :-)

It could be either. It's also possible that neither the camera nor
the card is at fault. If you had previously unplugged the card from
a PC card reader (USB or otherwise) while the PC was still in the
process of updating the card, the card's FAT16 or FAT32 filesystem
might have become damaged. This could lead to various sorts of data
corruption. In particular, a situation in which two different picture
files on the card are allocated the same cluster of space, could cause
one picture's data to "wipe out" some or all of the other's. That can
lead to this sort of "partial image" problem.

It's true that you should always wait until well after a camera powers
down completely, before you remove a card. The same is true for a
PC... use the "safe remove" feature offered by your operating system,
and wait until the computer confirms that it's safe to remove the
card... and then wait a couple of seconds more just to make sure.

You may be able to diagnose the problem further by putting the card in
a PC reader, and using whatever sort of filesystem-checking features
are available on your operating system (e.g. Scandisk).

It would probably be wise for you to retrieve all of the pictures from
the card to your PC, and then reformat the card. Doing so will
reinitialize the filesystem and eliminate any trace of filesystem
damage from a previous unplugging.

I like that explanation and was going to suggest running chkdsk or
similar prior to formatting (just for info).
