Default D200 random flat battery.

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone else has had this with their D200.
I have had it (my second one) for about 2-3 months now and it has
worked perfectly with a lot of use.
I have been using a MB-D200 grip on it for most of the time.

of late, it randomly tells me the battery(s) is flat and disables the
shutter.
Turning off and on again sorts it out for another couple pics then
same story.

Going into the menu, the batteries are 84% and 92%. Removing the grip
and using either battery has the same effect.

it is totally random and sometimes happens after the first shot (Never
before the first shot) and sometimes after 5-10 minutes.

Mostly I have the 70-200mm VR on but it happens with the 18-200VR as
well.
The meter says it's full, AF comes on and the VR starts working. Then
you hear the VR clunk back into place and the AF is disabled as is the
shutter.

Anyone else had anything like this?

Hate the thought of sending it back to the shop.

Cheers,
Crispin

Have you tried it without the grip? I don't use the grip and I have never
seen this with either of my batteries. One battery is from Nikon and the
other is a generic that I bought from B&H (Lenmar?). No issues here.

I suspect either your grip or your camera are the issue.

Pardon me. I didn't read quite closely enough. You have already eliminated
the grip from the equation, so I suspect your camera. Bring it in.

I've have had no problems with battery; but a friend who uses VR lenses has
short battery life. I don't use the battery pack or VR lens.
I've also read in threads that it is very important to follow initial charge
instructions.

Sounds very familiar. Same issue with my D200 with 70-200VR. Nikon support
suggested doing a two-button reset (see page 97 of manual) - with the camera
on, hold down the two buttons on the top panel with the green dots next to
them. I couldn't get the problem to recurr after that (but I only spent ~10
minutes trying since doing the reset and haven't used the camera much since
then).

Good luck.

This is a common problem that you can read about on dpreview, Nikonians
etc. One solution (and this worked well for me) is to clean the lens
contacts, camera body lens contacts and battery contacts. I used an
ink eraser while others have reported success using contact cleaner. I
had the problem persistently with my 70-300 VR and bigma and since
cleaning the contacts it hasn't reoccurred in over 5000 shots.

Your friend then most likely has the lens set to Active stabilization. It
is a slide switch on the side of the barrel.

The batteries are LiIon batteries and do not need a full charge and discharge
cycle to avoid damage, as old NiCd batteries did.

VR does use more juice, but it doesn't suddenly drop the battery flat and
seconds later after a reboot leave it more than 75% charged. I am sure there
is an issue with the camera [or perhaps the grip has caused a problem with the
batteries?]. These are EN-EL3E batteries [or equivalent clones], right?

The VR lenses do not shorten battery life all that much. The D200 does
not have very long battery life anyway, especially if you are coming
from something like the D70 where the battery seemed to run forever.
Although they use essentially the same battery, the D200 has a lot more
for the battery to do, especially running that big LCD screen.

The lithium ion batteries for the D200 do not have to be conditioned or
run empty. Just recharge them whenever it is convenient. In fact,
running them empty and then fully recharging them will probably shorten
battery life more than anything.

Sounds like a bad contact in the camera. I would try rubbing the
contacts with an eraser.
