Hell, I don't know what an RIP is, let alone whether they're good and/or

Raster Image Processor. Think of it as an enhanced printer driver. A
PostScript interpreter, either built-in to the printer or software
like GhostScript, is a RIP.
A RIP will give you more options than the default printer driver and
give you more control over the printer.
To the OP....
I've heard and read very nice things about ImagePrint - it'll set you
back ~$500. If you're only interested in B&W printing, take a look at
Quad Tone RIP. It's shareware, and costs $50.00.
