Canon XTi built in flash

My Canon XTi flash flashes like a strobe light with mutiple fast flashes
when going to take a picture. Also the flash automatically pops up even
when outside in normal daylight. Anyone with a XTi experience this or heard
of this? Thanks so much.

Could be normal, e.g. for red eye reduction. Did you try changing the flash
settings?

Could be normal, e.g. if the flash is set to on because you need some fill
flash. Did you try changing the flash settings to off?

The multiple flashes are so that it can autofocus in low light.

It pops up if you have it in automatic mode.

On second thought: a crucial piece of information is missing from your post:
which mode are you shooting in?
- manual
- apperture/shutter priority
- program/automatic
- one of the scene/vario/... modes

Maybe Canon does it different but for the first three the camera should warn
you about low light, but not fire the flash unless you activate the flash
explicitely, e.g. by popping it up.

For the last option all bets are off. I can even imagine that for e.g.
"night portrait" this behaviour is desired and therefore the standard
setting, because this is a scenario where you want red eye reduction as well
as a slow fill flash.

strobe = helping autofocus in low light
Pop up = you are using Green mode or P mode in low light conditions.

It won't pop up by itself in P mode.

I believe it will "strobe" if you push the "preview" button on the
lower left side of the lens (as you hold the camera). It also puts
the apperature to whatever you are using so you can preview your DOF.

You are probably right, tx for correcting me.

I dont have a 400d, but I couldnt believe someone was using the green mode
with a DSLR

The biggest drawback to green mode on a 400D/XTi is that it doesn't allow you
to shoot RAW. I've never been able to come up with a good reason to use
anything but P, Tv, or Av. My wife sometimes uses green mode on her XTi (we
each have one), but I generally encourage her to use P instead.

For manual, which is what I mainly use, it will strobe. As far as I know,
the only way to turn off the flash is by turning the round dial to no flash.
The flash automatically pops up even outside. If anyone here has a Canon
XTi and know how to chanbge the flash settings please let me know because I
can't find it in the manual. Thanks for your feedback and time and I am
hoping someone can reply.
