I have just received a Canon S5 as an early Xmas gift, and am still
familarizing myself with the manual and the cameras features. One feature
that I would like to use quite frequently is Super-Macro, but so far I have
been unable to get into that mode. The instructions seem simple enough,
(press and hold the macro button for more than a second), but when I do this
nothing happens. I can get regular macro mode by momentarily pressing the
macro button, but anything more than a momentary push causes no change....
it doesn't even go into regular macro mode in that case. I am doing this
with the zoom fully retracted as the manual states that zoom is not usable
in Super-Macro mode.... but I've also tried it at various levels of zoom.
Am I missing something? Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Are you leaving your camera in Auto mode? Look at the "Functions Available in
Each Shooting Mode" in the back of your manual. I have an older S-series camera.
Super-macro is only available in P, Tv, Av, M, and 2 SCN modes (color accent and
color swap features available in Super Macro).
Thank you! That was the answer, but I don't see any mention of that on the
macro pages, and I hadn't yet discovered that table in the back of the
manual.
Thanks again
Kevin.

The "basic" user guide only says that "This setting cannot be set in some
shooting modes," and refers you to the advanced guide, page 199. The
advanced guide, itself, doesn't discuss Super Macro at all, so far as I can
tell. The manual for the S3 has a clear chapter on that function.
Maybe Canon doesn't want you using it. With its zero focus distance, it's
too easy to touch the lens to your subject...
