i realize this may be a waste of time due to the incredible amount of
crap that appears to be on this newsgroup, but...
I have read that there is a serious dust problem with this camera (I
also read it's no different than any others, but the trend seems to be
there is - or WAS - a problem.
One of the things that concerned me was that a lot of people were
saying there was "factory dust" on the camera i.e. it was really bad
coming from Canon and required immediate cleaning and sometimes a
return. Most of these reports were coming from a few years back, so I
was wondering if this still appears to be the case or if Canon has
made any corrections to the problem?

Sounds like a lot of "Rita-Babble". I would suggest you do a Google on
"Canon 5D sensor dust" and see what comes up. Add a grain of salt, or two,
to the results, tho.

Yeah I am smart enough to have done that, but as I said most of what
comes up is ~1-2 years old. There were a lot of posts about it, even
from some "professional" reviewers too (who got "beta" versions to
test drive). they even said only time will tell if this is a real
problem.

Really, I've been shooting a 5D for two years, and while dust can get in,
all it takes is a couple of minutes with a rocket blower to fix things. News
flash: any digital camera with a removable lens will have dust issues.
