I wonder if anyone could tell me how to determine the number of shutter
activations on my camera. (I bought it used) and am curious. I understand
its in the exif data but I have tried various software but I am unable to
determine the number.
anyone have a way to determine the count, short of sending it into canon?

use exif tool and look for the 'shutter count' field.

Mr ExifTool (6.86, WinXP) tells me, "SHUTTER COUNT 14"; that's off by
a couple thousand (5D). It's within a few for /session/ shutter count.
He shows no such statistic on a 20D nor on a 350XT. Maybe it's hidden
in some esoteric language with which I am not familiar. Or I'm just
missing it ...

Its not the shutter count, because the number is way too low and does not
increment properly. It may be the count of the pictures from the cf card..

Get a divorce and a copy of the REAL exiftool. Oh, you will also
need a working Perl.
I would be interested to know too, but have been unable to find it. I would
imagine that there is a hidden menu that can be accessed by Canon, but can't
find any info on it anywhere.

Yeah. Next time I take a recommedation I'll interrogate the
recommender before making a move: "You sure that's all I need? I
wouldn't want to look the fool in some Usenet newsgroup populated by
kind-hearted and generous geniuses ... "
