As I understand it - autopsy refers to the examination of the dead by a
member of the same species. Necropsy is the more general term and usually
refers to examination of a different species.

I was curious about the etymology awhile ago and looked it up. Means
"seen with one's own eyes": Autopsy \Au"top*sy\, noun. [from Greek
expression, from seen by one's self; self seen: compare to the French
expression autopsie. See Optic,].

As I understand, the nikon did not do the disecting - but I could be
wrong.
