Default camera that can do remote capture with computer

I'm planning on using a digital camera as a document scanner, since
it's much faster than a regular scanner. I need a digital camera that
can do remote capture with a computer via USB. Can someone provide a
list of point and shoot digital cameras (or camera series) that have
this feature? I don't need the latest models, I'm willing to buy a
used one too. I know that some Canons have this feature, but I'm not
sure which ones. Thanks!

You are referring to "tethering". See:
http://www.systeminsight.co.uk/Digit...g_Overview.htm
for some information.

Many cameras can be tethered to the computers. Nikon's "Capture"
program allows their dslrs as well as some of the Coolpix P&S's to be
tethered. Canon also has a program.

Search Google using "tethered camera" and you will find a number of
references for cameras and programs.

I'm not all that familiar with the subject, but I think you will find
that it is the software, not the camera, that will be what you will
have to start with. Just about any digital camera has USB output, but
you have to be able to match the camera to the appropriate software to
tether.

I think you'll find that some programs will allow the images from a
tethered camera to be automatically captured by the computer, but you
will have to fire the camera and then see the image on the computer.
Other software will allow you to preview the image on the computer
screen and capture by computer without touching the camera's release.

Although it did not have a USB interface, I recall doing that with my
Kodak DC210+ about 10 years ago.

I did that search, but most of the results come up for DSLRs. I'm
looking for a point and shoot (i.e. cheap) solution since I don't need
that kind of quality. Currently, I have to look up each model on the
manufacturer website to try to determine if it supports tethering/
remote capture. So far, the cheapest camera I found was Canon A series
(such as A75).

I found a good list of Canon cameras that do and do not support remote
capture:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=499864

The PowerShot models listed in the table below are known to work with
PSRemote:
Pro series
Pro90IS, Pro1
G-series
G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, G7, G9
S-series
S30, S40, S45, S50, S60, S70, S80, S1 IS, S2 IS, S3 IS, S5 IS, SX100
IS
A-series
A30, A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, A400, A510, A520,
A620, A640
Digital IXUS SD100 (Digital IXUS II), SD110 (Digital IXUS IIs), S230
(Digital IXUS 330), S400 (Digital IXUS 400), S410 (Digital IXUS 430),
S500 (Digital IXUS 500)

The following Canon PowerShot cameras do not support remote capture
operation and therefore will not work with PSRemote:
A series: A410, A420, A430, A450, A460, A470, A530, A540, A550, A560,

If by document scanner you mean single sheets, consider either the
Pentax or Visioneer shown here:
http://tinyurl.com/628ume

I used to own an early Visioneer mono scanner of this type. It was very
fast but support was dropped for later than win98 (it was com port
connected). This type of scanner works fast, give it a look. Only
problem I had was with glossy magazine pages had a tendency to slip.

If you have alot of documents get a document scanner, if you
photograph look at the minimum mp size of the camera your files will
be excessivly large for a document, a scanner will keep them small and
give editing options like with Omni Scan going to word. Onmi Scan is
usualy free with a scanner.

<edited>

Hello, Tony:

My very first digital camera [a low-end Largan "Lmini 350" (350,000
pixels)], purchased way back in December of 2000, allowed such a
function.

Curiously, none of my later and better cameras [including a Pentax
K100D (DSLR)], are so capable, in this respect!

Cordially,

I agree with this. My company uses a scanSnap, and couldn't be happier
with the speed.
