I recently decided to get a digital picture frame. I ended up with the
pandigital 7" widescreen. The only real problem I have with it, is it
will not shut off via the on/off program while in slideshow mode. It
works fine and will shut off and on if I am viewing the calander or a
single picture not in slideshow mode. I know you have to program the
on/off, then manually start the on/off program in whatever mode you
are in. I also know that if you make any button presses on the remote,
it shuts off the on/off program. That does not see optimum to me. Very
dissapointing. But I have to admit I do like the picture the frame
displays. If it would just program properly in slideshow mode I would
not even be writing this post.
So I have been looking for the best frame out there. Judging from
reviews on amazon, I thought it may be the kodak frames. But there is
apparently no true random in the slideshow. Is this really correct?
Then I find out about wi-fi. Cool. Then I read that if there is a
network glitch, the slideshow will stop and does not auto-restart. Is
this really a huge issue with these wi-fi frames?

The Samsung SPF-83V does not have this problem. It caches as many
photos as it can and keeps the show going. I can let it update at home,
then bring it to work where there's no wifi and it keeps going.
What you wouldn't like about the SPF-83V if you're used to a remote is
the buttons. They're on the back, so you have to reach around the back
to use it. This is especially awkward with the four directional buttons
since left and right are backwards. But with wifi you don't use the
buttons as much. Once it's set up you mostly turn it on and off.

Thanks for the reply. I read your review. You did not mention
anything
about programable on/off and whether the frame has a true random
slideshow. Is everything ok in those areas? Thanks!

Yes, I've used programmable on/off before and it worked fine. The
slideshow resumes when it turns back on.
I just tried turning on the "shuffle" option and it did randomize the
pictures.

Thanks for the info. Does the WiFi use your WIndows Media Player 11
server
like the Kodak frame apparently does. I have my media shared on my XP
Pro
PC with WMP11. It works great on my PS3. So if these WiFi frames can
connect
to the server as well (as seems to be the intent) that would be
awesome.

It's supposed to, but I haven't tried it. I just use the Media RSS
feature to pull my photos from OurDoings.

Thanks for hte replies everyone. I appreciate it. I ended up with a
Kodak
8" non wifi from best buy. Is seems to work as I expect.
One thing I ran into was size limitations to my SD card. I originally
tried
copying all my files to the root of the drive. I then find it fills up
at about
400-500MB. I think did a google search and find I need to create a
subdirectory and can indeed copy the entire 1GB. Is this a well known
fact? It does explain whay these cards always have subdirectories in
whatever you use to write to them.

The Windows file format has a limit to the number of files in a root
directory, which varies depending on the format. Therefore, it is
recommended that users format the card so that few files are in the root
directory, and a subdirectory holds the majority of files, especially if
they are small.

More.
I have 430 pictures on the flash card (SD) in my digital picture
frame, and they are in a subdirectory. They have been reduced in size
to match the resolution of the frame, even though it will handle full
size files, in order to get a lot of pictures on a small (128 meg) card.
It is about 1/2 full.

If you have pictures in many folders on a computer hard disc, is the
simplest technique to copy those wanted for the frame to a new folder? I
was recently given a Kodak frame but was irritated by the fact that tho'
it smoothly connected to my router I would have to go thro' the Kodak
web site and also a recommended upgrade of the software messed up
completely. I know there is a USB cable but I'd hoped to work
wirelessly.
