Has anyone managed to install and successfully use the software that came
with your 40D? I wish to use the Eos Utility prog but can't see how to
install it and the version of zoombrowser that I had in the box (5.8)
appears not to have been told about the 40D and says that the camera is not
compatible. Anyone had any success with it yet ?
I can't answer your question but I do want to know if the camera is a big
enough improvement on the 30D to make it wotrth buying as a poor man's
MKIII. When you've got it working to your satisfaction and if you know the
30D please post a bit of a review.

FWIW, the latest versions of both Adobe Camera Raw (ACR 4.2, which I think
will work with Photoshop Elements 5.0 and later) and Adobe's Lightroom
(version 1.2) both support the 40D. (And both partly or mostly (but not
completely, sigh) fix a nasty glitch in which excessive NR was applied to
Canon raw images.)
Personally, I've not found Canon's software particularly useful.
Bundled software not recognizing the camera sounds suspicious. Did you buy a
gray market version of the camera? You might want to check with Canon to
make sure that the guarantee is valid...

(I'll add the 40D points to more plots as I get time; basic
data are in the tables.) The low light performance at low
ISO are mixed: the 14-bit ADC isn't helping over the 30D.
But the 40D has a lot of nice other features.
