No such thing in SF, try Best Buy or similar. There are specialty camera
shops but not discount.

Fry's Electronics or Best Buy. Check the sale ads when you walk into the
stores. Camera stores out here are not into discounting: instead it is where
you go to find real photographers with real experience and good stock of
expensive professional equipment.
In LA I recommend Samys on Fairfax. In SF Bay Area Calumet is OK. But if I
am going to overpay I prefer Keeble and Shuchat in Palo Alto: Great people,
great selection, great rentals, but higher prices. For best price (sometimes
matching BHPhoto) go to San Jose Camera. My only complaint is SJC apparently
did not have a tax-free sale (yet) this year. :-(

well... if you want inexpensive used digital, look on Ebay.

That I know; the thing is, I'd rather buy either a brand new or a
refurbished digicam in a store, and I'm going to be in LA & SF in October.

Great, thanks! I'll try to look them up online, unless you have the URLs at
hand.
I'm not really looking for highly professional gear; either a cheap but
reliable SLR or a compact with a min. 10x optical zoom, min. 5 MPix and
optical image stabilization. One that will have good ratings on photoxels. I
wouln't like to spend more than around $280, probably. As you see, price is
a factor...

Fry's or Best Buy. Which ever has the best sale advertisement that week.
For your camera purchases, do some research at www.dpreview.com and narrow
your selection before you get to the store. Do not go by what they guy at
the store tells you!
