80-400 f/4.5- 5.6d ed af vr. A lot more expensive but I don't want to buy a
lens and then find I wish I had spent more money for something better.

I have the 70-300 f4.4-5.6 lens with the plastic
lens mount and i have no problem with it.

It seems that the new VR verion is better than the older versions

I've used all 3. The ED glass in the VR is definitely better than the ED
glass in the non-VR (even though they are both labeled ED). Chromatic
aberration was much more pronounced and focus was slower in the non-VR.
The 3rd lens you mention lasted on my camera for maybe a week. I was
lucky to get a shot that was in focus.
