Yeah, the fatal combination was ZA, XP Service Pack 2, and some MS
security update number that ended in a 48 I think. Killed my wife's
computer - lost all internet access, caused ZA to block all traffic.
MS of course pointed the finger at ZA. Workaround was to lower ZA's
defense level, or uninstall the MS security update. I opted to
uninstall the security update. Came out with a patch to ZA fairly
quickly, installed the patch, reinstalled the MS security update, all
is now well.
Oh yeah, and changed the MS Update settings to check but NOT
automatically install the updates.

Yes, that was my thought as well - it looks like the "invitation" was faked.
I'd be looking to thoroughly scan everything to see what the fake upodate
has installed!
FWIW I installed ZA v8 upgrade on our four systems a few days ago without
any grief at all. Certainly an infinitely better product than Norton, whose
primary anti-malware strategy appears to be to consume all tyhe available
resources such that your PC simply has no spare capacity to run a virus (or
indeed any applications)...

I agree. Unfortunately so far all the ones I've tried over the years
seem to hog resources at times but I realize some are better than
others. Of course on the other hand, I guess periodically it will
take some resources when it's in checking mode?? Currently I'm using
Kaspersky and I like it overall but there are times when it slows my
system to a crawl for a short while then things will return to normal.

I know about the resource hog - I used to run Norton a few
years ago. I'll try returning it, but the cellophane wrap is already
open (not the sealed CD sleeve, though.

Yes, I read about that MS patch, so I checked the WINDOWS folder,
and it was installed months ago with no problems that I was aware of at
the time. I guess I dodged a bullet.

The invitation was a popup, and until I told ZA v.7 to wait another
60 days, the invitation to upgrade popped up everytime ZA checked
for updates. Since no one else on ZA forums is complaining about
****o popups, I'll assume that the **** got through during the transition
period between v. 7 and v.8. I *will* be more concerned if it happens
again, though. Meanwhile, the complaints about v.8 functionality pour
in at the ZA forums.
