XPS M1210 Skype/microphone not working

I am wondering if anyone has encountered the same problem I have:

The microphone does not work. On applications such as skype, I can
hear but my voice does not get recorded/trasmitted.

I have both Linux (Ubuntu Feisty, recently upgraded from Edgy) and
Windows Vista, and the same problem occurs in both systems (on Vista,
skype sometimes produces a message along the lines of "this computer
has no sound capabilities for skype).

At least one more person I know with the same model is experiencing
the same problem. I SUSPECT there is a bug in the drivers.

Has anyone encountered anything similar, and (hopefully!) solved it?

I have a similar problem with a dimension E520.
Try some USB-headset or a USB/audio converter. Then audio is not going through your
sound card.
