Running Win XP Media Edition and I deleted a whole bunch of programs as I'm
selling computer to a friend as I got new XPS 720 H2C. Somewhere along the
line I no longer have either the CD or DVD available. In device manager
there is a yellow ! beside each drive. I deleted both and rebooted and it
comes up finding hardware but it doesn't install any drivers as the !
reappears. What can I do short of reinstalling the operating system to get
them back?

Go here, get drivers. http://support.dell.com/support/down...WW1&hidlang=en
exactly what model dell do you have and when did your purchase it (or tell
us the tag number instead).
your system probably has a recovery partition that will allow you to reset
it to the factory default configuration with a single command - making like
the first time that you turned it on and obscuring your old data from all
but the most ambitious. to be through about wiping your old data, once you
reset the system you could download a free utility called bcwipe that will
completely erase data stored in the free space on the hard drive.

That was to be my last hope. I was hoping to just get the cd/dvd to be
reconized again. I have taken care of everything else. My friend is not
very computer smart so I'm not worried about him finding anything he
shouldn't. I just want to get the drives up and running without all the
other hassle.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to go into the registry and try that. Can't
do it till tomorrow but will give that a try.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Hopefully I can get it up and running
and won't have to report back.
