Need to see the specs on the system, but my initial response is that $300 is
fair to good. If you have the specs, cut and paste'em.
There are some XPS Gen/6XX/7XX owners here who can also add to the thread.

Right. So what he's offering you is an XPS GEN2 with a 3.0GHz Northwood,
512mb of RAM, a 128mb NVidia card, 80gb Hitachi HDD and a CDRW (and a
Floppy drive).
If he's not throwing in any of the original CD media or extras, then - to me
anyway - the machine would need to be in pristine shape in all ways
(cosmetically, hardware, COA intact) for $300 to be a "good" deal.
In effect, this machine is a beefed up equivalent of a Dimension 8300
system, but with a larger power supply(460watt), RAID, maybe some extra USB
connects and a 1394/Firewire connect - and a much larger case with more
drive bays.
If the owner is on the up and up and the system is in good shape, it's not a
bad deal per se. You're stuck with an AGP video card upgrade path and DDR
RAM versus DDR2, but I'm running a similar system right now and pleased with
it.

in addition, the system would be noisy and suck up lots of electricity.

its a tank, and sounds like one.
