Oh one other thing..... Id wipe Vista off the machine
and install XP Pro
Re: XPS 420 case design" Not sure abt it. Comments?
The nicest thing about the case is the easy slide off side panel. I do
not care about the miniview screen which only works with Vista.
At the time I bought it, it had more pwerful processors availalbe for
it, in my case a 3.0ghz dual core which I decided on over the quad
core 2.66ghz. For a lot more $$$ there were more pwerful xtreme
processors.
I just recently got fed up with Vista since desktop explorer (not IE)
would crash several times a day (very common problem reported in the
Vista forums), killing Zone Alarms display. I could deal with the
explorer issue. The final straw was a brand new install of Quickbooks
2008 which would not start (widely reported issue on the quickbooks
forums with solution forthcoming from Intuit).
Dell does not support XP on the XPS 420, however there are pointers to
drivers in the dell forums. You will need a copy of XP SP2 for the
SATA drivers or a USB floppy. I kept the Vista install, imaged it and
bought a new SATA drive for XP.
Overall a very nice machine. Check the Dell outlet store, a few weeks
ago there were a bunch of them.

Yeah that mini view screen..... I don't know... not
sure that's a big thing with me or even if I want it
period

Ahh.... OK that may be a deal breaker as I have no
interest in Vista at all right now
What abt the 530 or 531 desktop....can you get that
with XP?

Go over to the small business site the Vostro 400 seems to be equivalent
and is available with XP without any hassles. You do not need to be a
business. Just call yourself [your last name] associates.

Ok
So the business side is the only way to get XP on a
dell machine?

Out of curiosity, I checked the vostro 530 and it hight end chip was
lower than most of the XPS 420 and the price started getting up there.
It might be worth while to buy a copy of XP pro SP2 and find out if it
has SATA drivers. You can get an XPS 420 with a floppy or a USB
floppy.
Again, it also depends on how fussy you are about the case
