My Dell XPS 410 doesn't play nice with video cards.
The system came with a Dell GeForce 7900 GS PCIe which died about a month
after I received the system.
I replaced the card with a ATI Radeon X1650 Pro PCIe. That card died today,
less than six months after I installed it.
Neither card gave any warning that it was failing. I installed both cards
in another system just to confirm they are dead.
I have the original replacement for the 7900 which Dell sent under warranty
but I am hesitant to install it if it is just going to die like the others.
The 410 has an Intel E6700 and 4 gigs Ram installed. The OS is Win XP SP2.
I would say coincidence. One of mine has a passively cooled 7600GS and
runs 24/7 with very heavy activity, so it runs hot. My other one has an
8600GT and also runs 24/7. Been running 6+ months without a problem.
Is your machine where it can get good airflow? If it is buried under a
desk with things on each side, it is probably just getting too hot.

The airflow is restricted as I have one of those desks with a CPU cubby. I
leave the door open when the system is in use but it sounds as though that
may not be enough.
I'll try relocating to an area outside the cabinet to be safe.
Thanks again - Robert

I think that might be the problem. My primary 410 puts out enormous
heat when heavily used. It does primarily video compression, so it runs
at 100% CPU and incredible disk activity 24/7. It actually heats up my
entire office so hot that I'm going to run another duct.

If you want to leave it where it is you can try drilling some large holes in
the rear of the area where the PC is located. You couls then mount a small
fan back there to blow air through the enclosure..
Tom,
How would you describe the noise level of your 410 when it is under
that kind of load?
Thanks

If I stick my head under my desk, I can hear the fan. At 100% CPU
constantly, the fan runs, but it isn't bothersome. My other 410 (under
the credenza) on which I am typing this is almost silent.

If you run it at 100% load 24/7 it is louder, but it is still one of the
quietest machines I've ever owned.

Unfortunately I can't say that as my ceiling fans (motors) are silent
even when running <g>. I have to say tho my 410 (not under much
load) is pretty silent to the point that you almost don't know it's
on.
