I appreciate all the advice and opinions I received. That was one of
the most interesting threads I've read and every response was great.
I currently have the 4550 2.53 - One gig ram- LG dvd-cd r/w - HP
dvd-cd/rw - second HD 160G-newer video and sound card-
Samsung 931BF 19" Square and just ordered a Logitech Surround.
Have -DSL 1.5
I couldn't boot (not me, the 4550) about a year ago and bought a used
4550 one on Ebay and swapped until things were fine. Odd thing though,
if I swapped the Ebay stuff to mine, it wouldn't work. I swapped my
stuff into the Ebay one and all has been fine.
I have XP Home and picked up an XP Pro COA on the Ebay case.
Okay, here we go.....
I was really leaning towards the 8300 for about $200.00, but by the time
I upgraded ram and the sound card, I would be over $300.00.
I was looking at a couple of 8400's on Ebay, but a solid one would cost
me over $300.00.
Since it's the middle of winter and I'm bored, I decided to bite the
bullet and I'm blaming it 100% on you guys.
I bought a pretty new (March 2007) XPS 410 for a total of
$402.00 including shipping. I've put the specs, below and I think it
might wrap a bit, so sorry about that. No monitor and all the
CD's that came with it and keyboard.
From the looks of things, I might have to get a sound card, but I'm no
audiophile and that should only set me back about $40.00. I just got my
new Samsung 931BF, so I'm all set.
My big decision is whether to dump Vista, especially since I have so
many programs - Nero7 and many more, that I don't want to have trouble
with.
Again, thanks to all and I'll let you know when I receive my new POWER
system.

You bought a fantastic machine. First machine I've owned that I thought
was truly better than my 4550. The E6600 is the sweet spot -- fast and
a 4M cache.
I seriously doubt you'll need a sound card. The integrated sound is
excellent and even includes optical out. I use it to drive my 5.1 home
theatre and have tried it with an excellent sound card and couldn't tell
any difference.
The listing shows a nice 20" monitor, but I'm guessing the seller kept
that.
You're going to be very happy. MUCH better deal than either the 8300 or
8400. This one will last a long while.
I like them so much I have FOUR of them. Two E6600 and two Q6600. I
base my entire home entertainment system on them.

Congratulations, Wally.
Enjoy. Far nicer than any rig I'm running right now!
Vista is fine with 2GB RAM but requires updating much of your software.
Considering your old software, definitely go back to XP.

Sounds good, I would add 2 1gig sticks of ram for a total of 3 gigs, ram is
cheap, Windows loves ram (even xp) (don't use your old stuff, it is slower
then what in in the new computer)
My advice is to try Vista, get rid of McAfee download all the Vista patches
and see what happens....I believe Nero 7 will in fact run in Vista.....most
software will EXCEPT those that write to the kernel....old anti virus,
quickbooks & the like.....you may have to tell it to run in xp mode but it
should work.
I am using M/S One care live, if you have no other f/w a/v preferences, you
might try it, or you might try one of the free ones out there, at any rate,
GET RID OF MCAFEE!
If you do decide to go back to XP, make sure Dell has all the drivers and
stuff you need to do so before you go back, I found, the Dell version of XP
to be much less stable than Vista (I know it goes against all the FUD you
hear) My computer was bought just before Vista came out, I ran XPMCE for 3
months had at least 12 BSOD's, I clean installed Vista & not one BSOD since.
Since you are not an audiophile, the on board sound should be enough.

Good, I won't get a card then. I bought these speakers and I just play
Winamp sometimes.
My "Home Theatre" consists of a Sansui 5000A that I bought in the Army
in 1969. I have Polk speakers and a Denon cd player. It's like a
Trabant engine in a Corvette, but I like it. Obviously can't bring
myself to put the Sansui in the basement.

That would be too good to be true. I have my two Samsung 931BF 19". I
like the monitor because of the vertical height.
Since the lady is a first-timer on Ebay, can't write a sentence to save
her life and want's a money order, I think I will go pick the thing up
in person.

Again, thanks for the advice. I've been reading the group for a while,
but never really had too many questions.
I'm sure I will when it comes to deciding to load WinXP or not. I'm
SATA deficient and have been reading up on it.

Thanks Stew. Since I sold my boat, I've been a little bored.
I almost was going to get another 4550 and then saw the
XPS on Ebay and bid on it.
I lost the bidding and the other guy backed out, so I
got brave and pushed the button.

I think I will. I use pretty old versions of Eudora, Agent, MS Office,
ACDSee, etc. I don't like the html 'feel' of some of the new apps.
I have a ton of programs loaded that I like.
I use WinXP Classic and it's running pretty slim. I guess I won't
have to be concerned about slim anymore.
Thanks

I think I will add the ram. It is pretty cheap compared to my 4550 ram.

Nero 7 will indeed run in Vista I found out, but I have a ton of other
older programs. Microsoft just irritates me, it's not the bloated
operating systems so much as their marketing model.
Also three words - DRM. I don't use too many MP3's , but
why is an operating system sticking it's nose in that area?
I know why, but don't like it.
I'm afraid if I do a virus scan, I'll find Vista in the virus vault
>I am using M/S One care live, if you have no other f/w a/v preferences, you

I use Zone Alarm Pro and AVG, also a bunch of other utilities -
ERUNT, SysInternals stuff, etc.
I gave my router to my brother and am not networked. No problems so
far.
I guess now I will install a network.

I think Vista is pretty stable, just not too backwards compatible. The
Fisher Price GUI isn't too appealing unless you like to watch Sponge
Bob.

I have never reloaded WinXP on my 4550 and have had two BSOD's which
were my own fault. For me, WinXP has been quite solid. I've run about
every version of Windows except 2000 and have liked them all.
