I appear to have lost one of my backup discs - anyone know if you can
install XP SP2 from a different Dell machine on what was originally an
SP1 box, without having to **** around with activation / calls to MS ?
(failing that, any way to reactivate the once-only "burn a backup"
option so I can redo it ?)

the only dell oem windows os cds that required activation when installed on
a dell system that i have seen are those that came with early dell latitudes
(even when installed on the system that it originally came with). even if
it does require activation you have the activation code on your machine and
as long as you use an oem version of the os that number will work with it
(can't mix retail cd with oem product code and vice versa).

ps. this is only true if you install xp from the dell oem cd after having
initially booted from the oem cd.
if you boot to some incarnation of windows that is already installed on say
the c drive, and then pop in the dell windows xp oem cd and run setup, you
will be asked to activate windows within 30 days of installation or it will
lock down (only starting to the activation screen and demanding that you
enter a valid product key to get back into windows).
