Wish I'd known the difference between Inspiron and Latitude...
Bought the e1405 two months ago, and I'm pleased with it. Today
spent time with a new Latitude equivalent, which has greater
functionality, better build quality, more connectivity. The
Latitude cost $300 more apples-to-apples, but seems to be worth
the difference. They weigh almost exactly the same. If I were to
make the choice today, I'd spend the extra money.

How have you determined "greater functionality, better build quality,
more connectivity?"

I don't know if this is still true, but I think past Latitude lines were
made with less plastic then Inspirons for example the LCD backing. This
would make Latitudes feel more solid & durable at least.

The D520 has been at a great price point for those who want XP. Right
now there is a deal for $468 off, down to $649 for a nicely equipped
Core 2 Duo.
I prefer the 630. It is selling for $949, again with XP Pro or Vista
Business, or Vista Ultimate for $50 more. That's with a 3 year
warranty!
I didn't like the build quality of some of my Latitudes, but that may
be because I used them as a student and put them through a LOT of
abuse. I had keyboard problems, cracked casing (on a Latitude 510),
discoloration due to heat (probably long resolved, and with the new
colors one would not be able to see it).

There are four buttons around the mousepad - two at the bottom
and two at the top (programmable), plus a nipple (which I
prefer). There's also a serial port, which one of my legacy
devices requires (I had to buy a serial-to-USB converter).
As for build quality, I like the Latitude keyboard feeling and
the solidity of the screen housing. They seem much more solid.
However, both of these seem sturdier than my previous unit,
which was by HP.

Actually if I had it to do over again I'd buy a Lenovo T61. Finally
the prices are where they should be.
