I've been doing some more reading, and now wonder if my parents should
get XP or Vista for their new computer.
Is Vista really that bad?
XP is what, 7 years old now? In a few years, some software developers
won't support XP anymore. (I have a Windows 2000 PC, and noticed that
Apple recently stopped supporting Win2K for their QuickTime product.)
So that would be a reason to get Vista.
Also, does the 32-bit version of Vista support ALL 32-bit apps and
drivers? Just wondering if the Orinoco Gold wireless adapter in my
parents' current computer will work with Vista.

No, but it's a resource hog and if you're planning on getting them a
budget machine stick to XP. You'll need two gigs of RAM to run Vista
comfortably.

You're quite likely a long way off from developers not supporting XP.

Given your earlier Q6600 and 3GB questions, than Vista. It's fine.
Nothing special, but not bad. I run it on about 1/2 the machines in our
house.
As for the Orinoco Gold, check with the manufacturer to see if it is
supported under Vista. Don't hear much about them anymore. XP drives
'might' work, but not always.

Why gamble with Vista when more like XP. Likely you have less
problem with drivers if you go with XP. Worry about the future when
it becomes a problem. Keep it all simple for now.

I have an XPS420 with exactly those specs - I took Vista off and installed
XP because I found the performance appalling.

As I recall, the Model T was pretty reliable, as was the horse.

Doing what? I have much less powerful machines running Vista just fine.
For his parents, I'm guessing he doesn't need incredible power, unless
his Mom is into complex FPS games.

Just every day stuff really. It just doesn't have the snappyness of XP.

XP will be alive as an option on new OEM computers until 2010 for corporate
users.
Get XP, but with hardware capable of running Vista if needed between now and
the release of Windows 7.
