i don't have any statistics on where 'most' of the negativity surrounding
vista comes from, and not sure where you get yours, but i have used it and
speak from personal experience. we can tell him whatever we want, though i
get the impression he really has already decided what he wants and was just
looking for reassurances. i can't imagine vista being the 'right' answer
about what operating system to choose for a new computer unless the question
is what operating system do i chose if i want to be frustrated by learning a
new interface, being constantly hassled by 'the man', and would like to
experience potential compatibility issues with existing software and
hardware (ie his wireless card) on my new replacement computer. all the op
asked was if he should choose xp or vista and 'is vista all that bad.' the
answer is xp, and yes (or, if yes is too strong, then there is nothing
compelling about vista to motivate you to select it) . since he is shopping
for his parents and is asking this questions that suggests to me two
important factors 1) he is not familiar with vista 2) his parents are not
expert and he will be supporting it. if the folks are still using 98 then
they clearly are not powerusers and it is unimaginable that they will find
great value in having a large analog clock on their screen or translucent
windows. and if the op knows windows 2000 (stated) or xp (not stated) then
it seems to me that he would be more readily equipped to help with xp than
with vista.
