Hello all,
I just did a new install of XP (SP-2) on an old Dim. 8200. Finally got
all the stuff installed and working OK.
Except for Explorer.
When I open a given folder (say Pictures) and set it to Thumbnail view
it opens OK BUT as soon as I close it and reopen the folder it reverts
back to details. I tried the usual items under the folder view tab and
made sure it is set to remember folder views. What am I missing?
Another item I just noticed is that it will not allow me to set folders
so they are not tagged as read-only.
Anyone have a solution. I tried Google and found a lot of folks who had
the same problem but no real solution.

Yup, that's Windows for you. I've not found a cure yet, but I did find a
work around. I found that using a freeware program called FreeCommander ( http://www.freecommander.com/ ) will do it if you select thumbnail view in
View. It seems it has to reconstruct the thumbnail view each time you
activate a pane, which can be kinda pokey, but it will remember to use
Thumbnails. So if you don't mind working in a file manager program, it will
do the trick.
As for changing read-only, I'm not sure if you want to change many files or
just a few, but another freeware called Properties Plus will let you do
that. Of course, you can also open a command window and use the command line
to change attributes for a whole bunch of files.
