Will Dell replace Inspirons e1405,e1505,e1705 this year?
Is Dell coming up with a new Inspiron laptop line to replace the current
line this year? Other companies are incorporating built in web-cams in their
lines. Will Dell do this for the Inspirons this year or is it just going to
be more of the same?

I think it is going to be hard to improve on the existing design and
looks, and it will be interesting what they come up with.
I would like to see the 12" model moved back to the Inspiron line.
Right now Dell computers feel solid, and I like the looks compared to
the other laptops that are out.
I like the silver. How are they going to follow up on that? Back in
black?
Having a web cam is going to be more and more important as a selling
point, so I think it would be a mistake for them to not offer that as
an option. They should offer a webcam with a microphone.
Maybe a few dedicated configurable buttons where the power button is
now. VOIP, Messenger, Media? The problem with this is all the calls
support would get wondering how to use them.
I'm happy with what I have. I have a 2 year complete care warranty on
this 640m. Does anyone know if I can easily extend it to 3 or 4
years? I am tempted to go for 4.
This laptop finally fits into the "good enough" category, like almost
all of my other gadgets. I can't even think of a gadget that I would
want right now. Life is good.

Scratch that. On second thought, Dell could improve a bit on the
build qualilty. They are solid, certainly more solid than models from
the past. My prior 14" Inspiron P-M's screen hinges came loose and
the screen flopped around until I sent it in. The build of my current
laptop is good but I am very careful with how I adjust the screen. I'd
like to get more competant with fixing simple problems like that
myself.

One major advantage of owning a Dell notebook (except for the lamentable
Inspiron 1000, 1200 and 2200) is that you can download the service manuals from
the Dell web site. To disassemble a Dell notebook, you need a couple of really
small Phillips head screwdrivers and the service manual. Also a lot of
patience and a good memory for how it all goes back together. All that is
missing a some description of symptoms, causes and solutions, similar to what is
in the IBM/Lenovo service manuals. But you would know the symptoms for a loose
screen, follow the service manual for removal of parts that expose the mechanism
holding screen to body of computer, and go from there.
And, just think, Dell charges big bucks for someone to become a certified Dell
technician, just like Microsoft sells a whole stinking study course and tests to
become a certified Microsoft weenie. Enduring these courses can make one
certifiable, but in a different sense... Ben Myers

Hey, I like my 1200! On sale a couple years ago, I added a 1gb stick, and it's
really nice. It's my `modern' laptop, for when I have to access a site that
this win95 desktop's Netscape 4.0 can't handle.
And it plays my only DVD, the Complete Get Smart! series from Time Warner,
into a discarded 17" monitor for watching across the room, audio plugged into
the world's most complex non-audiophile home audio system.

Boy, if I could tell the future, I'd put it to better use in real
estate or the stock market. That said, I can't say for sure this
year but of course it's a matter of time.
This sounds like many questions I've seen before almost worded the
same as to whether to buy or wait and my answer is, if you need it
now, buy it otherwise wait because eventually a better one will come
along and likely for less money (no disrespect intended here just
assuming you are thinking of buying a dell).

If you treat it gently and with extreme care, it will continue to serve you
well. Sturdy it is not... Ben Myers

It hardly gets moved at all. It sits atop a lectern open all the time, purchased
as a camera accessory chiefly. Adding Cygwin and having a modern web browser turns
out to be an added advantage.
Re: Will Dell replace Inspirons e1405,e1505,e1705 this year?
I see you are another one of them obsessive-compulsive neat freaks!
If the 1200 hardly moves at all, that qualifies as gentle and extremely careful.
Also don't dump Coke inside it.
Back to the original topic, name brand companies change models as fast as I
change my underwear. It's all part of a grand plan to befuddle the customer
with a blizzard of choices not clearly explained, just like telephone company
rates and airline ticket prices. I would not count on Inspirons e1405, e1505,
or e1705 being around for all that long... Ben Myers
