at the moment i own a diemsion 8300, which is now 3 years old. So i think
about buying a new desktop, and the vostro seems to have all the things i
want to have.
I'm very happy with the case and the screwless installation of peripheral
hardware in my dimension, so i wonder whether or not the vostro is built in
this service-friendly way too?
And i'm not so happy with the non-standard size and plugs of my dimension
mainboard of my dimension, so i wonder whether or not the vostro now has
standard ATX or BTX or whatever hardware (MB, PSU and so on)?
And how loud or silent is it related to a dimension 8300? Especially with an
Core 2 Duo 6750 or 6850 and a NVidia GF 8600?
Thanks, Jens

In short, no. Many of the user-friendly quick-release features of your 8300
are no longer present. In fact, I feel the 8300 to be far superior in a
service-friendly manner.

Your 8300 actually uses a standard ATX power supply and connectors. That
said, some connects are proprietary (front power switch I/O connectors). I
believe the Vostro has the same commonalities (standard PS connects, but
others proprietary)

I've only placed a standard (read: non-loaded HW configuration) of the
Vostro200, and it seemed very quiet to me (2 fans, cpu heatsink and rear
case/chassis fan). Truthfully, I've never found either of my 8300's (CPU
case fan + Radeon 9800 graphics fan) to be overly loud. Not sure if this
helps or not.
Personally, I'd still try to locate a Dimension XPS 410 or 420 over the
Vostro desktops. I find the build quality of the case and components to
eerily similar to HPaq systems. Lots of plastics in an unimpressive
punched-out cheap sheet metal case. In Vostro, cards are "screwless" btw,
held by a single (screw fastened) bracket. You cannot open the side cover
without a screwdriver, however.
