Make sure you have the necessary drivers for XP for the hardware on that
machine before you reformat and install XP Pro.
you can install xp on your vostros 1700 with to startout any problem. boot
from the xp cd to install (press f12 after power on and then strick a key
when prompted to strike a key to boot from cd...). but you should download
the drivers in advanced because after you install windows your network card
will not function until you install the drivers. be sure to get the chipset
driver, video (depending on your video card), sound, network (depending on
which wireless network card that you have), and mouse driver. once those
are all installed then download/install all the windows updates by
repeatedly visiting update.microsoft.com and selecting custom until there
are not more updates available.
also, if you only replace the windows vista partition and leave the utility
partition and dell media direct partitions alone then you can reinstall dell
media direct again and it will work from xp.

ps. a quirk about the drivers listed on dell.com for the vostros 1700...
they don't list the xp audio or video drivers under the 1700 (they do have
the chipset, network, mouse). look under the vostros 1500 for the xp audio
and video drivers.
